Funny how only a few weeks ago we were complaining at how boring Canadian elections were. We longed for the drama and pizazz of the US, and it looks like we got our wish. Thanks to an unprecedented and extremely disappointing ruling by the Governor General to suspend parliament until Jan 26, PM Harper gets a reprieve from the no confidence voice that has been brewing over the last few months. Anyway, I am NOT a fan of Harper or his closed minded policies, and I really resent the GG swooping in in her role as the Queen’s representative (hello, outdated!) and interfering.
This video has started to make the rounds, it’s a clip of a German movie where Hitler has just received some very bad news from the troops. He doesn’t take it well. This has been a favorite viral video as many people have added their own subtitles and several versions have been circulating. We can now add Harper to the list of video spinoffs. This is actually pretty funny, especially the part where he talks about Jack Layton cycling to work.

Hopefully, this will be the first of many creative ways to engage Canadians in the political process. Let’s hope more Canadians come out and start expressing their opinions.

Rahaf,
Proroguing parliament, no confidence votes, the GG, and governments elected based on the majority of electoral districts won, not popular vote, are elements of our current government. You may resent the decision of the GG and others may resent the coalition’s attempt to seize power through a no confidence vote for which they didn’t have a mandate.
Both sides may take advantage of all available processes which benefit their position. For example the coalition chose not to call for an election because that would have been disadvantageous.
The real issue is how do we reform government using new media tools which will enhance our democratic institutions for the betterment of society. This will not be an easy challenge as we will not know the effects of the changes without the passage of time.
Comparing Harper to Hitler doesn’t seem like a great place to start the reform process.
Today’s challenge is to find ways to use new media tools to enhance the will of the people. Getting rid
@ Mark,
i don’t think the video was comparing him to Hitler as much as capitalizing on an already funny New Media campaign. We haven’t had too many Canadian viral videos and it amused me to see the creative direction that some people chose.
I do agree with your comment about the reformation of government using those tools. It’s a great place to start the conversation.
I just hope we don’t ever take ourselves so seriously that a video like that wouldn’t elicit even a little smile.
Thanks for stopping by and for the comment, I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts.

I dunno. Not sure I agree but okay. Good post anyway. Cheers.
